Stai alla finestra come le luci si accendono
per la strada. Altrove un tram, che porta
commesse e impiegati a casa, cigola in questa
sera prima del Sabbath. Un gatto nel cortile piange
per aver trovato chiusa l’immondizia; gli strilloni
iniziano il loro giro omicidio-a-penni.

Siamo al chiuso, per un po’ al sicuro, salvi fino
a domani. Togli il vestito, levi
le calze, attenta a non smagliarle. Ora, nuda,
soffice luce su soffice carne, ti fermi
un attimo; ti giri e mi guardi –
sorridi come sanno solo le donne
che a lungo rimangono distese con i loro amanti
e se ne son fatte più verginali.

La cena è povera ma stiamo così bene.

You stand near the window as light wink
On along the street.Somewhere a trolley, taking
Shop-girls and clerks home, clatters through
This before-supper Sabbath. An alley cat cries
To find the garbage cans sealed; newsboys
Begin their murder-into-pennies round.

We are shut in, secure for a little, safe until
Tomorrow. You sleep your dress off, roll down
Your stockings,careful aganist, careful aganist runs. Naked now,
With soft light on soft flesh, you pause
For a moment; turn and face me -
Smile in a way that only women know
Who have lain long with their lover
And are made more virginal

Our supper is plain but we are very wonderful.

Kenneth Patchen poeta e narratore statunitense (Niles, Ohio, 1912-1972). Amante dei toni surreali, scrisse alcuni romanzi riusciti, tra cui The Journal of Albion Moonlight (1941; Il diario di A. Chiarodiluna) e The Memoirs of a Shy Pornographer (1945; I ricordi di un pornografo timido). Considerato un precursore della beat generation, P. pubblicò anche numerose poesie, raccolte nel 1969 in Collected Poems, seguiti ancora da Aflame and Afun of Walking Faces (1970; Festival di volti in movimento), Wanderings (1971; Vagabondaggi), In Quest of Candlelighters (1972; In cerca di accendicandele).
